ARP Fastener Materials & Specifications

8740 Chromoly Steel: Most common ARP material. Heat-treated alloy steel with 200,000 PSI tensile strength. Ideal for street performance and mild race applications. Black oxide finish prevents corrosion.

ARP2000: Premium alloy steel with 220,000 PSI tensile strength. Used in high-horsepower and forced induction engines. Superior fatigue resistance for extreme applications.

L19 Tool Steel: Ultimate strength material at 260,000 PSI tensile strength. Reserved for top-fuel, Pro Mod, and extreme racing applications. Requires special installation procedures.

Stainless Steel (300 Series): Corrosion-resistant material for header bolts, carby studs, and external fasteners. Lower strength than chromoly but won't rust or corrode.

Why Choose ARP Fasteners?

Factory fasteners are designed for stock power levels and single-use installation. ARP fasteners use superior materials, precision manufacturing, and controlled heat treatment to deliver consistent clamping force and prevent fastener failure. Every ARP fastener is individually inspected, thread-rolled (not cut) for superior strength, and includes premium-quality nuts and washers. ARP's proprietary ARP Ultra-Torque assembly lubricant ensures accurate torque readings and prevents galling.

ARP Installation Requirements

Assembly Lubricant: Always use ARP Ultra-Torque or ARP moly assembly lube. Never use motor oil or anti-seize—they give false torque readings and can cause fastener failure.

Torque Specifications: Follow ARP's torque specifications, not factory specs. ARP fasteners require different torque values due to superior materials and thread engagement.

Torque Sequence: Use proper torque sequence in multiple steps (typically 3-4 steps to final torque). Allow engine to heat cycle, then re-torque head studs after initial startup.

Thread Preparation: Chase all threads with proper tap and die. Clean threads with brake cleaner or solvent. Ensure threads are dry before applying assembly lube.

Common ARP Fastener Applications

  • High-compression naturally aspirated engine builds
  • Turbo and supercharger forced induction applications
  • Race engine assembly and rebuilds
  • Engine swaps and conversions requiring reliable fasteners
  • Nitrous oxide and power adder installations
  • Street performance builds with increased power levels
  • Marine and industrial high-performance engines

Complete Your Engine Build

ARP fasteners are the foundation of a reliable engine build. Complete your assembly with quality components:

  • Gaskets: Head gaskets, intake gaskets, and complete gasket sets
  • Engine Accessories: Water pumps, valve covers, dipsticks, and performance components
  • Oil Systems: Oil pans, pumps, filters, and complete oil system components
  • Cooling Systems: Water pumps, oil coolers, and cooling components
  • Intake Manifolds: Proflow manifolds for LS, Holden, and Ford applications

ARP Fastener Torque & Stretch Method

ARP fasteners can be installed using torque method or stretch method. Torque method uses calibrated torque wrench with ARP Ultra-Torque lubricant. Stretch method measures fastener elongation for precise preload—preferred for rod bolts and critical applications. ARP provides detailed torque specs and stretch values for all fastener kits.

Performance Benefits

  • Superior clamping force prevents head gasket failure and blown gaskets
  • Consistent torque values ensure even load distribution
  • Reusable design allows multiple engine assemblies and rebuilds
  • Prevents main cap walk and crankshaft damage in high-horsepower engines
  • Eliminates fastener failure from fatigue and stress
  • Corrosion-resistant finishes for long-term reliability
  • Race-proven in top-fuel, NASCAR, and professional motorsports
