Why Upgrade Electrical Components?

Factory electrical systems are designed for stock power levels and minimal accessories. Modified engines with high-compression, forced induction, or performance ignition require upgraded electrical components to deliver consistent spark energy and reliable starting. High-output alternators prevent voltage drop when running electric fans, fuel pumps, and accessories. Performance ignition systems provide stronger spark for complete combustion, improved throttle response, and increased power.

Electrical System Sizing Guide

Alternator Output: Calculate total electrical load (lights, fans, fuel pump, accessories) and add 25% safety margin. Stock alternators are typically 60-80 amps. Performance builds with electric fans and pumps need 100-140 amps. Race cars with data logging and electronics may require 150-200+ amps.

Starter Motor Selection: High-compression engines (10:1+) and large-displacement V8s benefit from high-torque reduction starters. Lightweight racing starters save weight but require good battery voltage. Choose gear reduction starters for reliable starting in all conditions.

Spark Plug Lead Resistance: Performance leads should measure 50-500 ohms per foot. Lower resistance delivers more spark energy but may cause EMI interference. Solid-core leads (zero resistance) are for race-only applications without electronics.
